Applications are now open for the City of Aspen’s food tax refund.
Aspen residents could be eligible for a $55 refund. To qualify, applicants must have been registered to vote in Aspen for the full year and prove their Aspen address matches their voter registration.
The refund reimburses Aspen residents for about as much as they would spend paying sales tax on a year’s worth of groceries.
The food tax refund began in 1970. At that time, the refund was just $7. It was put in place alongside the passage of a 1 percentsales tax.
Residents can apply through Aspen’s website or in person at City hall. Applications are due April 15.
