As some prepare for camping or barbecues over Labor Day weekend, forest officials are reminding residents and visitors to take steps to prevent wildfires.
White River National Forest officials said the number of human-caused wildfires spike over Labor Day weekend.
Officials ask to remember these tips while celebrating this weekend:
- Check online or call the local ranger district about any fire restrictions or closures.
- Make sure campfires are kept small and in a designated campfire ring. Before leaving, make sure fires are drowned and cold to the touch.
- Do not set off any fireworks.
- Do not drive or park on dry grass.
- When pulling a trailer, make sure chains and metal parts are not hanging off the vehicle while driving.
- Smoke responsibly.
With hot, dry conditions in the Roaring Fork Valley this weekend, officials said it only takes one careless spark to start a wildfire.
