Garfield County Sheriff Identifies I-70 Standoff Suspect

Garfield County Sheriff's office

The Garfield County Sheriff’s office identified the man arrested Tuesday, following a three-and-a-half-hour standoff on I-70.

Justin Lopez Madrid was arrested around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon. Officers originally responded to reports of a stabbing near the West Rifle I-70 exit.

According to the Garfield County Sheiff’s office, four men had gotten into an altercation. Madrid hid from authorities by taking cover behind some rocks on a hillside nearby.

I-70 was closed between Rulison and West Rifle and Highway 6 was closed in both directions at West Rife.

Madrid faces charges including felony second-degree assault, attempted murder and tampering with evidence, as well as several misdemeanors for resisting arrest and violating a restraining order.
