Glenwood’s Rosebud Cemetery is nearly full

Glenwood Springs has owned the Rosebud Cemetery since 1929, and its end could be near. The City Council discussed the issue Thursday during a work session.

The cemetery has close to 8,000 grave sites, and just 2 percent are available. Most of those are set aside for veterans and their families to buy.

During their work session, City Council members heard from the Parks and Recreation Department about options to prolong the cemetery’s capacity; it’s expensive to keep up. Staff spends a lot of time maintaining the cemetery by hand.

The city owns another cemetery, Linwood, where the legendary gunfighter Doc Holliday is buried, but it’s tough to get to and likely won’t be expanded.
