Independence Pass to open today

Courtesy of CDOT

Independence Pass is scheduled to open at noon today.

CDOT crews have been working to clear this steep stretch of Highway 82. The work included avalanche mitigation – including avalanche blasting. Three slides made it to the highway.

Crews also had to clear snow, ice and rock as well as repair potholes and replace signage.

CDOT communications manager Tracy Trulove said residents start asking around March when the route will open.

Trulove said it’s their goal to open the Pass by Memorial Day weekend each year so travelers can enjoy it.

Temporary closures are possible in the coming weeks if there is late snowfall.
