The 2018 JAS Cafe starts Thursday night with vocalist Niki Haris, as well as James Horowitz and his trio.

NikiHaris is the daughter of renowned jazz pianist Gene Harris. She was a backup vocalist for Madonna for over a decade. She’ll be performing at the Cooking School of Aspen Thursday and Friday night with the James Horowitz trio.

Horowitz is president and CEO of Jazz Aspen Snowmass. His instrument is piano. He said he has long been a fan of Gene Harris’ style and is excited to be accompanying Niki Haris tonight.

"I got exposed to his music, and he was just somebody that I gravitated to and had his records and listened, and when I wanted to play along, which I still do to this day - put on the cd player in this case, crank it up and we're playing along with his great swinging band.”

Expect a mix of jazz and blues standards, as well as a few familiar holiday tunes sprinkled in. Other performers include Dee Dee Bridgewater, Katie Thiroux and Matthew Whitaker.
