KUNC film critic Howie Movshovitz on Aspen Film's Academy Screenings

Aspen Film's 2015 edition of its Academy Screenings kick off Tuesday. The lineup includes "Room", "Spotlight" and "Trumbo" as well as indie hit "Tangerine."

Howie Movshovitz is a film critic for KUNC in Greeley, CO. He spoke with Aspen Public Radio's Patrick Fort about the top films of this year and what to expect out of the festival.

Highlights of the interview...

On "Room" and adjusting to the realities of everyday life...

One of the things they've dealt with in the room is what's real and what isn't. What is real on the television. The little boy gets it that animation is television. The mother is trying to help him understand that sometimes what's on the TV are pictures that come from a world that is real that he hasn't seen.

"Spotlight" and the journalism genre-film...

"Spotlight" is a newspaper film. It's a long-honored genre in American film because many of the early screenwriters, when the movies turned to sound, came from newspapers... Newspaper films are always about uncovering something. "His Girl Friday" is about uncovering corruption in the city. "Spotlight" is a beautiful genre film.
