Local Libraries Offer Variety Of Online Resources During Closure

Garfield County Public Libraries

Pitkin, Basalt and Garfield County libraries’ doors are closed, but they’re still open for browsing online.

Garfield County Libraries are offering a new streaming movie and eBook service called Hoopla. Hoopla offers audiobooks, streaming TV shows and TumbleBooks, animated, talking picture books for kids.

"I definitely wanted the public to have access to this as soon as possible," said Brett Lear, executive director of Garfield County Libraries.

Basalt Library says cardholders can download e-books and audiobooks, check out digital magazines, and stream movies from the digital media library, or do research using several different databases the library offers.

All Colorado public schools are closed through at least April 17. Pitkin County children’s librarian Allison Alexander has gathered resources for parents and students while they’re at home.

“Having a child myself,” Alexander wrote on the library’s website, “I realize that this time has created a lot of uncertainty and many of the resources we traditionally rely on for educating and entertaining our children are unavailable.”  Her list includes online foreign language lessons, magazines for children and programming from PBS Kids and Sesame Street.
