Mayor Steve Skadron is speaking on a panel about green cities in Dubai this week. It is the third major international environmental conference for Skadron since he represented Aspen at the UN climate talks in Paris last December. Skadron has also spoken at events in Taiwan and Seoul, South Korea.

He caught up with Elizabeth Stewart-Severy last week to talk about his experiences at these environmental conferences, and said that he sees Aspen as a leader among municipalities worldwide.

“The biggest takeaway is how impressive Aspen is,” Skadron said. “It’s quite a compliment to the city and all of the people who live there and commit to a certain value proposition.”

In Dubai, Skadron appears on a panel about green cities. He said the location of the conference may signal a momentum shift in environmental policy.

“Perhaps they are positioning themselves for a post-fossil fuel world and getting out ahead, so that’s encouraging,” Skadron said of the government in Dubai.

Aspen native Elizabeth Stewart-Severy is excited to be making a return to both the Red Brick, where she attended kindergarten, and the field of journalism. She has spent her entire life playing in the mountains and rivers around Aspen, and is thrilled to be reporting about all things environmental in this special place. She attended the University of Colorado with a Boettcher Scholarship, and graduated as the top student from the School of Journalism in 2006. Her lifelong love of hockey lead to a stint working for the Colorado Avalanche, and she still plays in local leagues and coaches the Aspen Junior Hockey U-19 girls.
