Mobile voter tools aimed at young voters

Elise Thatcher

In an effort to increase voter registration, primarily among young, first time voters, the state of Colorado has launched a system that allows people to register by sending a text.

The system is for those with smartphones. You text the word “Colorado” and you receive back a link to a mobile-screen-compatible webpage. You can check your voter registration and update the information. For those who are not registered, there are a couple of fields that can be filled out all from the phone, and then a submit button sends the registration through.

Pitkin County clerk Janice Vos Caudill said this region’s seasonal workers in particular will benefit from the new registration tool.

“Those are the people that I feel need the assistance because they’re younger, they haven’t done this, and you don't think about this when you move to do that right away.”

Smartphone users can use their keyboard to text the word Colorado to the address “2vote” (28683). Residents can use either their drivers licence number or, new this year, the last four digits of their social security number as registration identification. More information from the Colorado Secretary of State’s office is availablehere.
