Monday is the deadline for seniors and disabled veterans in Colorado to apply for a property tax exemption.
Fifty percent of the first $200,000 of a home’s value is exempt from property tax for anyone over the age of 65 in Colorado, as long as they’ve lived in the home for at least ten years.
Seniors must apply to receive the exemption. Completed applications can be turned into any county assessor’s office.
Honorably-discharged disabled veterans are also eligible. They need to have owned their residence since January 1st, 2019.
The exemption only applies to primary residences.
Garfield County Assessor Jim Yellico says that this exemption offers some relief from rising property tax bills.
Last year, qualifying senior citizens and disabled veterans in Garfield County received over $900,000 in property tax exemptions.
