Thunder River Theatre Company’s production of “Kimberly Akimbo” opens Friday. It’s a dark comedy about a teenage girl whose rare genetic illness causes her body to age faster than it should.
Director Sue Lavin admits that Kimberly Akimbo might seem like a downer to audiences at first glance. The play tackles mortality and family dysfunction.
“And all of that would be something you might feel sad about, except at the center of the play is this very tenderhearted, warm, beautiful character Kimberly,” said Lavin.
Trary Maddalone, the actress portraying Kimberly, is a Roaring Fork Valley local with over twenty years of acting experience. Lavin says Maddalone’s Kimberly is complex, but grounded, as she faces the challenges that come with her disease.
“Kimberly Akimbo” runs through December 15.
