New work from Aspen Santa Fe Ballet considers contemporary dance from different angles

Joakim Roos

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (ASFB) will premiere a new work this weekend from a returning choreographer.

Brazilian born choreographer Fernando Melo has returned to ASFB with new choreography that’ll get its world premiere Saturday in Aspen.

Melo made his choreographic debut with ASFB in 2016 with the contemporary piece Re:play, which was met with praise from critics. His new work, titled Dream Play, blends video projections with movement to challenge the audience to consider contemporary dance from a different angle.

Dream Play will feature the company being shot from above as dancers perform on the ground, and the resulting film will be projected in real time.

Saturday evening’s program will also feature Alejandro Cerrudo’s Little Mortal Jump and Los Angeles-based choreographer Cherice Barton’s Eudaemonia. The latter got its world premiere in Aspen in February. Encore performances are scheduled for July 20 and August 18.

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet returns to the Aspen District Theatre Saturday at 8 p.m. For more information, visit aspensantafeballet.com.
