An Open Letter to the Community

Dear Community Member,

Whatever your politics, the results of the 2016 election have shown us all how divided we are. Both as a nation, but also in our own community.

I have heard it described that the United States has truly become two separate countries: We look at those with whom we disagree and see “other”. But across the Roaring Fork Valley and Colorado, there are families and individuals who all want the same things. We all want peace, prosperity, community, health, happiness, the best for ourselves and for our children. These are values we can all agree on.

At Aspen Public Radio, we know that media often plays a role in how we see the world. And too often lately, it has been a place to feed our own preconceived notions and prejudices. With half the country elated today, and half dismayed, we believe public media must step up to help bridge the divide.

In 2017, we will continue to welcome all to the table in forums, debates, and roundtable conversations. These venues can be powerful places to talk through difficult issues as a community. To find commonality, pluralism, humanity.

With deepest respect,

Carolyne Heldman
