Park City residents to visit Aspen

More than 70 Park City business people, government officials and nonprofit leaders are planning a visit to Aspen next month as part of their annual pilgrimage to other ski resort towns.

The four-day visit will cover issues such as land conservation, transportation and the arts, all of which are topics of interest for the Park City community. The itinerary will include presentations with elected officials and staff in Aspen, as well as a session with a representative of the Aspen Skiing Company. Park City attendees will have the opportunity to take tours of downtown Aspen, the transit system and the affordable housing program. There is also a day of meetings scheduled with officials in Snowmass Village, Basalt and Carbondale.

Park City tour director Myles Rademan came up with the idea to tour other cities in 1973 when he lived in Crested Butte. He officially brought the tradition to Park City in 1987. The first place they visited was Aspen, and he’s been bringing people back periodically ever since.

“So many of the issues that Aspen particularly has been dealing with, we are also dealing with,” Rademan said. “I follow what most of the resorts are doing, but I always look to Aspen as one of the gold standards.”

Aspen mayor Steve Skadron said he likes tours like this because it gives a chance for both sides to learn from each other.

“I’m always interested to hear how they are approaching common issues,” Skadron said. “Meetings like this are important because communities like ours are all battling to preserve our core values and retain this mountain town ethic. The themes we are dealing with are similar.”

Skadron said Aspen City Council’s moratorium on new construction in the downtown core and surrounding areas, which has been in effect since March, will be a big topic of discussion during the tour.

The visit is scheduled for September 7-11.
