Phone scam hits the Roaring Fork Valley

Courtesy photo

A man is calling Roaring Fork Valley residents, claiming to be a Pitkin County Sheriff  and then asking for money.

The calls are coming from someone identifying himself as Lieutenant David Williams from the, quote, “Warrants and Records department.” The suspect has been calling area residents and telling them that there is a warrant out for their arrest. He then says the only way to prevent getting arrested is by electronically sending money to an account.

However, there is not a warrants department or lieutenants at the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Adam Crider says law enforcement does not accept payments in exchange for dropping an arrest warrant.

“We’re not going to take money over the phone,” Crider said. “It’s going to be dealt with in our office, in person, or the jail or the courts.”

The suspect is reported to have a southern accent and calling from the number 970.238.0667.

Law enforcement agents advise against giving any personal account information or paying money.
