Pitkin County Bans Fireworks For Summer

Aspen Chamber

A state law passed this spring allows counties to outlaw firework; Pitkin County Sheriff Joe Di Salvo wants to do just that.

At a county commissioners meeting, Di Salvo made the case to ban fireworks from May 31 to July 5.

Previously, fire restrictions included fireworks. The new law changes that, allowing counties to prohibit fireworks without limiting campfires and charcoal grills.

Officials say fireworks are especially dangerous because of sparks that are hard to control.

If passed, county officials could extend the ban beyond July 5, if conditions remain dry.
