Pitkin, Garfield Counties Collaborate On Broadband

Pitkin and Garfield counties will share broadband equipment to get Internet to their rural areas.

Last week, the Colorado Department of Local Affairs awarded the two counties a little over $1 million to implement a wireless broadband system. The counties will share towers on either side of Highway 82, near Glenwood Springs.

Kevin Batchelder, Garfield County manager, said this will save money.

"It makes no sense to have two competing systems in the same area," he said.

At a meeting Tuesday in Aspen, county officials will discuss how the network should be managed. They’ll also celebrate the fact they got the grant.
