Prescribed burns planned in Gypsum, Rifle

Firefighters in Eagle and Garfield counties plan to ignite two prescribed burns in the upcoming weeks.

 

The fires will be on Bureau of Land Management lands in the coming weeks if the weather cooperates to keep conditions safe and to blow smoke away from local communities.

The 200-acre Sheep Gulch Prescribed Fire is planned four miles northwest of Gypsum in Eagle County and is intended to reduce hazardous fuels and help restore sagebrush in the area.

In Garfield County, the 160-acre Roan Plateau Prescribed Fire is planned north of Rifle to help restore an aspen forest.

Earlier this summer, local agencies worked together on what was deemed a successful prescribed burn in the Hunter Creek Valley.
