Pitkin County commissioner candidates

For this primary election, voters can only choose one candidate. The two with the most votes advance to the November election, according to the Home Rule Charter. Greg Poschman, Scott Writer and Hawk Greenway, all longtime valley residents, are vying for the seat. It is currently held by Michael Owsley, who has to step down because of term limits.A polling place will be set up at the Aspen Jewish Community Center for early voting from June 20 to June 27. Ballots returned in the mail should be sent eight days prior to the election deadline — 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28.

Public broadband question placed on fall ballot

The Pitkin County Board of commissioners gave their unanimous support last night for a ballot measure that would allow government distribution of telecommunication services including cable TV and high-speed internet.

“We are asking for the voters’ assistance in being able to move broadband services forward in Pitkin County for economic reasons (and for) public safety reasons,” said commissioner Rachel Richards.

A 2005 Colorado law outlaws government from competing in cable, telephone, and high speed internet markets unless voters approve a measure such as the one on the fall ballot. The proposal would not increase taxes, and would most likely result in a public/private partnership for infrastructure and implementation.
