Public weighs in on designs for new Pitkin County public safety building

Poss Architecture and Planning

The public got a chance to weigh in Wednesday on what they want a new Pitkin County building to look like. The Public Safety and Administration building will be built near the courthouse.

County Manager Jon Peacock motions to four renderings of a new 22,000 square foot brick and sandstone structure. He explains how to vote on favorite designs for the addition to the courthouse plaza. That’s the building where commissioners meet. Architect Bill Poss says the designs have subtle differences.

"(They all have) the same footprint, same inside operation functionality. What we're discussing today is just the skin of the building and adding character. What do we want it to look like?."

Two options were most popular Wednesday. One is contemporary and allows in lots of light with exterior sun shades and rooftop solar panels. The other design is more traditional with windows and a roof that match the nearby courthouse. The design team will consider the public input before presenting to the county commissioners.
