Roaring Fork School District builds new housing program

Elise Thatcher

As the Roaring Fork School District lines up new rental affordable housing units, officials must also come up with the rules about who can live where and under what guidelines. As Aspen Public Radio’s Elise Thatcher reports, the District hopes to have those regulations in place this fall.

The District anticipates having the first round of units available next summer. Outgoing superintendent Diana Sirko is part of the team working on creating new guidelines for the program, which will have rentals in Glenwood Springs, Carbondale and Basalt.

“There will be a lottery that occurs every year,” Sirko said this week. “And we’re wrestling with issues like how long does someone stay on the lottery, and can you get in a lottery in more than one community? Or can you get in a lottery that is only in the community you work in?”

Sirko also said it’s important that staff feel the final rules are fair and equitable, and the District will contract with property managers for day-to-day issues with the new units.

Somewhere between 14 and 17 units in Willits Town Center will be part of the first rentals available next year. The District aims to buy or build as many as 60 rentals in the next few years.
