Off-season transportation changes begin

Seasonal transportation changes are coming  - the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority limits service beginning today and the public can weigh in on a hike in summer parking fees.

RFTA routes serving Woody Creek and the Crosstown and Galena Shuttles are all canceled until mid-June. The express valley bus will only run weekdays and late night service is reduced for Snowmass and Aspen busses. The popular Burlingame route that began this winter will drop to hourly service.

Tonight Aspen City Council will hear the first reading of an ordinance to hike parking rates come summer. The proposed pilot program would run for June, July and August and effect rates in the Aspen core.

The “dynamic pricing plan” increases the cost of parking based on longevity. A thirty minute stop costs $1, the next hour $3, a car in it’s fourth hour would be paying $7.50.

If the ordinance is passed than these rates would be in effect during peak seasons and a slightly reduced dynamic pricing structure would apply in the spring and fall.
