Temporary housing offered to commuters

The City of Aspen is coming up with solutions to support businesses affected by the upcoming Glenwood Springs Grand Avenue Bridge closure.

The closure and corresponding detour is expected to add hours to commuters’ daily grind.

The months-long project begins Aug.14, right at the time that the Aspen Pitkin County Housing Authority’s Marolt Ranch property empties of music studies, but before winter-season workers show up.

The city is offering 20 temporary units to businesses that can then rent to employees.

“It’s an added expense and the question will be how many employers will want to take on an added expense,” said Assistant City Manager Barry Crook. The theory is that some employers will decide that avoiding lost man-hours is worth the cost of renting the Marolt apartments.

Crook calls the bridge closure a special circumstance, and does not foresee the city getting into short-term rentals in the future.
