Theatre Aspen season to spark dialogue with musical ‘Hairspray’

Tonight, Theatre Aspen’s mainstage production of the Tony Award-winning musical “Hairspray” begins its run with a series of previews before the season’s official opening on Tuesday.

Theatre Aspen is continuing to outdo itself. The Hurst Theatre, known as an intimate setting, will host its largest cast ever this year with 21 actors from all over the country populating the stage with “Hairspray.”

This past winter, executive artistic director Paige Price left the nonprofit after a decade. Markus Potter has since filled Price’s shoes as interim artistic director. He said the results of last year’s presidential election triggered Price to recreate the musical “Hairspray” for Aspen audiences.

“The musical deals with race in America, it deals with some of our divisions in the country,” he said.

This season, Theatre Aspen has added a new program that will provide the community with a space to continue the conversations inspired by the shows the nonprofit is presenting. It’s called the “Off Book” series, and it starts at the Pitkin County Library this Monday at noon.

Productions of the play “Sex with Strangers” and family musical “The World According to Snoopy” are also on this season’s playbill. For more information, visit theatreaspen.org.
