Tuesday night, Snowmass Town Council discussed the latest plans for a redevelopment of Snowmass Center. This week’s meeting focused largely on parking. Some council members, including mayor Markey Butler, said current plans don’t include sufficient parking.
The town’s building code suggests about 390 parking spaces for a development of this size, accounting for both residential and commercial needs. Mockups from developer Eastwood Snowmass Investors include about 15% less. Because that amount is within 20% of the town’s suggestion, it still meets requirements. Butler said that reduction from the suggested total was imprudent and would not accommodate the town’s future growth.
The developer also proposed more than double the amount of residential units suggested by the town, buildings higher than allowed by existing zoning rules and plans to build on a slope of more than 30%.
Those exceptions to code and regulation, called “variances,” would require “yes” votes from four out of five council members.
