Unusual winter wildfire likely caused by transient

Glenwood Springs Fire Department

The Glenwood Springs Fire Department had a surprising holiday last Thursday. On Thanksgiving Day, a small winter wildfire broke out near Walmart, which is extremely unusual for the area.

The Glenwood Springs Fire Department says it was likely caused by someone who had started a bonfire. The area is public land, just outside city limits, and popular for camping among people who are homeless or passing through.

Glenwood Springs Police also responded to the fire. A spokesman for the department said Monday there appears to be more transients staying for the winter than in years past. The blaze started after 6pm and got as big as 40 feet by 80 feet. It was put out in less than an hour.
