UPDATED: Thursday, 10:30 a.m. - The water line is fixed in Glenwood Springs. Water reserves are being reestablished. Normal water use may resume at 5 p.m. today.
The City of Glenwood Springs is advising residents to only use water for essential purposes due to a break in the raw water line servicing the city’s water treatment plant.
Essential water usage includes drinking, toilets, water necessary for cooking and basic hygiene. Restaurant operations are also considered essential.
Showers, irrigation, dishwashers, washing machines and car washes are considered non-essential.
In a release, Hannah Klausman, a senior planner with the City of Glenwood Springs, said maintenance was not being performed on the line when it ruptured and that the break is believed to be caused by aging infrastructure.
Water usage restrictions will remain in place until the line can be repaired and the water treatment plant can refill. City water is currently being provided from reserve tanks.
A large section of road on Red Mountain Drive was impacted by the break. Crews are working to repair the impacted area. The Mountain Springs Ranch and Red Mountain areas can only be accessed via Three Mile Road. There is no estimate for when the damaged road will open.
