Vanity Fair's Bruce Handy to lead Summer Words Reader's Retreat

Bruce Handy is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. He’ll be in town this summer to facilitate the Aspen Words Reader’s Retreat.

While many Summer Words sessions are geared toward writing, the Reader’s Retreat is a mix between a book club and a college lit class.

Bruce Handy, who has also written for The New York Times and The New Yorker, will focus on magazine journalism in the three-day workshop.

He said he wants people to appreciate the craft that goes into the genre, so that they become more critical consumers of news. "There are so many more outlets now that I do think it’s important for people to read both with a skeptical eye, but also an informed eye. You know, if you know what you’re looking for you can tell a credible article from a not-credible article."

Handy said he’s looking forward to spending time with the participants in the Reader’s Retreat. "As a writer, what’s better than passionate readers?"

The Reader's Retreat started in 2009. This is only the second year it will be focused on nonfiction.
