Winter season for the U.S. Forest Service starts today — and that means many roads are now closed to all vehicles with wheels, including bicycles.
The Forest Service said these closures protect critical wildlife habitat in the sensitive winter months and keep roads in better condition.
Representatives from the Roaring Fork Mountain Biking Association are working with the Forest Service on a proposal to open some routes to fat tire mountain bikes in future seasons.
Today is also the first day to buy permits to cut Christmas trees on federal public lands.
