Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!

Saturdays at 9:00am

Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! is NPR's weekly hour-long quiz program. Each week on the radio you can test your knowledge against some of the best and brightest in the news and entertainment world while figuring out what's real news and what's made up.

PETER SAGAL, HOST:

If there was ever an audience to whom I didn't need to explain what "Doctor Who" is, I am looking at it.

(LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: Now, one of the actors who played Doctor Who is Matt Smith, who also plays the young Prince Philip on the hit TV show "The Crown."

BILL KURTIS: Peter began our interview earlier this year by asking him which show had the most obsessive fans.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

MATT SMITH: There's only one winner...

SAGAL: Yeah.

SMITH: ..."Doctor Who..."

SAGAL: Yeah.

BILL KURTIS: From NPR and WBEZ Chicago, this is WAIT WAIT... DON'T TELL ME, the NPR news quiz. I'm Bill Kurtis, and here is your host at the Chase Bank Auditorium in Chicago, Peter Sagal.

PETER SAGAL, HOST:

Thank you, Bill.

(CHEERING)

SAGAL: Thanks, everybody. Thank you so much. Now, we are trying to make up for all the lovely summer days we wasted staring at our phones by revisiting some great moments from the recent past, which we were only able to experience the first time because our phones were dead.

PETER SAGAL, HOST:

I'm old enough to have lived through a number of revolutions in pop music, and I pretty much missed all of them while listening to my scratched-up original Broadway cast album of "Pippin."

BILL KURTIS: One of the...

(LAUGHTER)

KURTIS: One of the things Peter is utterly oblivious to was the rise of the Beastie Boys, the New York-based trio who helped to popularize hip-hop with their albums from the '80s and '90s.

PETER SAGAL, HOST:

Now, what would a great player be without a great coach? Well, according to at least one of them, they'd still be great players.

BILL KURTIS: Coach Mike D'Antoni of the Houston Rockets joined us in January of this year. We asked him about working with a superstar on his team.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

SAGAL: What's it like getting to watch James Harden play every night?

MIKE D'ANTONI: Special.

SAGAL: Yeah.

D'ANTONI: He's the real deal.

(APPLAUSE)

SAGAL: Thanks, everybody. Because we are public radio people, everybody assumes we're unathletic nerds, and we aren't any good at sports. And they are, of course, right. But we are interested in talking to people who are good at them.

PETER SAGAL, HOST:

Anna Kendrick first became famous as a start of the "Twilight" movies. It's amazing how much she's triumphed over that early adversity.

BILL KURTIS: Ms. Kendrick joined us in September of last year and told us that her origin story goes back much further than that.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

ANNA KENDRICK: Yeah. I started in theater when I was - well, I started in local theater when I was, like, 5 or 6. And then I did the play "Annie," which is, you know, the gateway drug for all girls trying to do theater....
