The 27th Street Bridge in Glenwood reopened last week, but the replacement project is taking longer than expected because of weather and missed deadlines from the construction company.

Road construction is expected to be completed in the next couple of months, with paint and landscaping scheduled for the summer.

As of Friday afternoon, the new 27th Street traffic bridge in Glenwood Springs is open for use. The new pedestrian bridge is also open with temporary connections.

“With the completion of the new traffic bridge, we are going from one of the worst-rated bridges in the state to a completely new bridge,” said Jessica Bowser, assistant city engineer.

The 27th Street Bridge in Glenwood Springs is expected to remain closed through Friday.

Portions of S. Grand Avenue and Atkinson Trail will also be closed this week, due to delays as crews take down the old 27th Street Bridge.    The old bridge must be deconstructed before the new traffic bridge is installed. More construction will be required to connect the new bridge to existing roads before it’s officially opened to traffic.

Glenwood Springs is about to embark on another bridge replacement project. Construction on the 27th Street Bridge starts Wednesday.

Inspectors say the 27th Street Bridge in Glenwood Springs is one of the worst in the state. It’s not dangerous, but it does need a replacement, which crews will start work on in 2019.
