The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide whether the Trump administration has the authority to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program any week now. This could have a huge impact on DACA recipients in the Roaring Fork Valley.

 

Jose Ivan and Adolphe Gonzales are eating lunch at Garcia’s market in Carbondale. Neither know Enrique Garcia, the man arrested at the Pitkin County Courthouse in mid-October by agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Both Ivan and Gonzales heard about the arrest, however, and say it reinforces the fact undocumented people in the U.S. should stay away from courthouses.

Last week, agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) arrested Enrique Garcia Hernandez at the Pitkin County Courthouse.

On Tuesday night, Sandra Lopez, a local immigrant rights activist, went into sanctuary in Carbondale. She’s now living with her two-year-old daughter in the basement the Two Rivers Unitarian Universalist church’s parsonage.

Silt resident Sandra Lopez – a mother of three and an immigrant rights leader – is taking sanctuary with a Carbondale church. She's one of five people in the state trying to avoid deportation by living in a church or temple. This makes Colorado the state with the most people seeking sanctuary in a place of worship in order to avoid deportation.
