Garfield County might not owe the oil and gas company Encana as much money as it thought it did.

In 2016, Encana claimed to have paid the county too much in tax. It wanted its money back.


At the beginning of 2019, the county hired an accounting firm to comb back through the numbers with Encana.

In the fall of 2018, special taxing districts, like Colorado Mountain College (CMC), went to voters with a problem: because of a complicated state law, growth on the front range meant they were in financial trouble.


The danger, it turns out, wasn’t nearly as bad as expected.
