The Colorado Department of Transportation is planning for a November 6th closing date for Independence Pass, but the predicted ten-to-twelve inches of snow this week may mean an abrupt closing earlier this week.
CDOT’s Tracey Truelove says the closing of the alternative entrance to Aspen is an encouraging signal for many locals.
"For the skiers it’s usually a good sign that we are starting to get a lot more snow and it’s time to shift our resources" said Truelove.
Once the gates are closed there will be two sets of “sweeper” vehicles making a last-pass to ensure no one gets locked in. Last year the crews had to wait an hour for a cross-country skier who was not aware of the impending lockdown.
