Aspen Releases Uphill Recreation Plan

Aspen wants more people biking, running and skiing up the mountains.

The city will present its uphill recreation plan at a meeting Thursday. It’s part of a plan to boost Aspen’s economy during all four seasons that’s been in the works since 2017.

The city hired consultants SE Group to survey skiers, mountain bikers trail runners and hikers, and make recommendations for improving uphill access and activities.

The survey showed that Aspen’s uphill infrastructure like trails was strong. However, users want more information about backcountry wayfinding and safety.

The city will try to turn sight-seeing visitors into backcountry users by adding trailhead kiosks and promoting easy backcountry trails.

A presentation on the plan is Thursday at 5 p.m. in City Hall.
