Pitkin County Comissioners Vote On Crystal Valley Trail

Pitkin County Commissioners vote Wednesday on a trail from Carbondale to Crested Butte.

This fall, the public reviewed multiple options for the trail, broken into segments that would be developed separately. The 7-mile span climbing from Redstone to McClure Pass would be developed first, as an unpaved single track along an existing historic route.

But the 13-mile stretch between the KOA campground on Highway 133 and the town of Redstone is contentious. Crystal River residents who live close to the proposed trail have been critical, citing threats to wildlife, habitat and private property.

Plans have been 15 years in the making; the first reading of the ordinance was passed earlier this month. The Crystal River Caucus has been added to the list of stakeholders since that reading.

If the commissioners approve the plan, it authorizes staff to apply to the U.S. Forest Service, as well as to the Colorado Department of Transportation, to begin their review of the trail.
