Xcel Energy company filed a request with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to replace coal generators in Pueblo with clean energy. It would mean closing two coal-fired power plants a decade early.
Environmental groups, including the Sierra Club and Western Resource Advocates, worked with Xcel on the plan. Press releases from those groups said the move could mean lower costs for customers, as well as improved air quality from cutting millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
Xcel Energy provides electricity to 1.4 million customers statewide, including some in Glenwood Springs and Carbondale.
