Zuckerberg Says Facebook Won't Delete 'Deep Fakes'

Ian Wagreich – Aspen Ideas Festival

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg rehashed his position on regulating “deep fakes” at the Aspen Ideas Festival on Wednesday.

Deep fakes are videos that use artificial intelligence to alter their subjects.

Zuckerberg says they’re fundamentally different from traditional misinformation, and need separate regulation.

Zuckerberg says Facebook will continue to mark videos that are obviously manipulated, but won’t take them down.

“If you’re just hiding things that are rumors, how are people going to refute them? I think it would be overreach to say, ‘Hey, you can’t say something that’s not correct to your friends,'" said Zuckerberg.

He said Facebook is still developing policy for deep fakes, like the recent video that showed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi purportedly slurring her speech.
