The “Living Lab” project that widened Castle Creek bridge for pedestrians and cyclists is being removed today and tomorrow.
Pedestrians and bikers will need to detour over the Marolt bridge while crews remove the wider sidewalk and the barriers that separate the path from the highway. There will be a lane closure on Highway 82 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, but staff said otherwise car traffic will not be impacted.
Matt Kuhn with the city’s parks department said this project was successful in providing safer passage across the bridge without impacting traffic. The study showed a 35 percent increase in bike traffic over Castle Creek. It is being removed now because the temporary barriers are not designed to be used in winter.
City council has directed staff to design a similar but permanent fix for bikes and pedestrians, and construction could start as soon as next spring.
