Local Teens Organize Carbondale's First PRIDE Parade

Carbondale Middle School GSA

Carbondale’s first PRIDE parade will be held Friday evening. The event, which celebrates the LGBTQ community and its allies, was planned by local teens.

Carbondale Middle School's Genders & Sexualities Alliance (GSA) organized Friday’s parade.

"I felt it was weird that the valley didn’t really have one," said eighth-grader and GSA-founder Rose Foster.

She says Aspen has Gay Ski Week, but she wanted something locally focused that anyone could participate in.

She herself was nervous about being gay when she entered middle school.

"I had some friends who were pretty homophobic that did not make me feel safe, and I was scared to come out to them," said Foster.

She says the event is meant show community support for LGBTQ kids.

A pre-parade party starts at True Nature at 3:30 p.m., which includes sign-making. Parade with PRIDE makes its way down Carbondale’s Main Street at 5:30 p.m.
