Garfield County approves zone change for new polo facility

LANDWEST Planning & Design

At their meeting Tuesday, the Garfield County Commissioners approved a zone change for a new polo club outside Carbondale.

Mark and Melissa Ganzi own the Aspen Valley Polo Club on Highway 100. They, and a group of partners, bought 100 acres nearby to turn into more polo fields, a clubhouse, a community center and more.

The zone changes effectively reduce the number of residential units allowed on the property, and permit more agricultural uses, like barns and irrigation ponds.

Gary Wright, an attorney working with the group, described his clients’ aims with the property to the county commissioners.

“I don’t want to be as presumptuous to say as this property has the potential to be polo West, with polo East being Florida, but it’s not impossible, either,” Wright said.

The owners hope to have fields ready for tournaments this summer.
