Robbery part of serious crime trend in Carbondale

Carbondale Police Department

Serious crime has gone up in Carbondale over the last year and a half, including the armed robbery at a retail store earlier this week.

A masked man held up Gloria’s Boutique Tuesday, while the owner, her husband and customers were all in the shop. The robber took an undisclosed amount of money after threatening them with a firearm. The crime comes after a police standoff last month, as well an armed robbery at a marijuana shop in December and an alleged homicide early last year.

“Things seem to be ramping up right now,” said Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling Wednesday. “I don’t know if that means we’re going to ramp up more or if it’ll kind of do like it usually does where it ramps up and then things are little more quiet.”

A representative from the District Attorney’s office said Wednesday the agency could not comment on whether Tuesday’s crime was part of a trend, because the event had not been reported to the DA’s investigators.

The Carbondale Police Department is handling the case now and did not have any leads as of Wednesday evening.
