Basalt Shooting Range To Reopen Saturday

Officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) announced that the Basalt shooting range will reopen Saturday. It’s been closed for more than two months after the Lake Christine Fire ignited there, and there will be some changes at the range.

CPW technicians are installing fire extinguishers and removing vegetation at the shooting range. The state agency is working with the Roaring Fork Valley Sportsmen’s Association to staff the range with safety officers, who would help monitor the site. There will be a site tour with Basalt Fire officials before the range reopens.

The changes come after some Basalt residents called for the range to be closed permanently or relocated.

But JT Romatzke, a regional manager for CPW, said in a press release that closing or moving the range is “not a fair or workable solution at the moment” and that the public needs a safe place to use firearms.

CPW plans to convene a steering committee to look into long term solutions, and Romatzke said the conversation about the future of the range is ongoing.

The shooting range hours will be 10 a.m. -  7 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
