Bear Problems In Basalt Prompt Public Meetings

Bear activity in Basalt is picking up and Town Government is holding a series of public meetings to address the problem. At least nine bears have made neighborhoods in Old Town Basalt their home, and some have broken into vehicles and garages. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen spoke with Police Chief Greg Knott who says his department has responded to more bear calls this year, compared to the year before.

The Basalt "Bear Aware" meetings will be held on September 18 and 24 at Basalt Town Hall at 6:00 p.m. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials will be on-hand and so will members of the Basalt Police Department. Town officials say the goal is to educate Basalt residents in ways that will reduce human-bear interactions. Up for discussion will be Town Ordinances, approved trash containers, fruit tree management, and ways to secure your residence and vehicles.
