White River N.F. Reacts To Controversial Forest Service Proposal

Marci Krivonen

The U.S. Forest Service is proposing media outlets ask permission before filming or photographing in Wilderness areas. But local forest service officials say little will change on the White River National Forest.

The directive was announced earlier this month and now media outlets are fighting it. An official with the National Press Photographers Association told CBS News such rules would be a clear violation of the First Amendment.

The regulations have been in place on a temporary basis, but the directive would make them permanent.

Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen spoke with Bill Kight, a spokesman with the White River National Forest, who says the rules would mainly apply to commercial outfits that film and not local media organizations.

The Forest Service is extending its comment deadline by one month because of the recent outcry. Now the public has until December 3rd to comment.
