Basalt to fund recycling drop off for September

Elise Thatcher

The Town of Basalt has stepped up to temporarily fund a popular recycling center. Waste Management runs the site now, but says the estimated operating cost is unsustainable without outside funding. The company met with Pitkin County and Basalt officials this week, on Monday August 10th.

“[Waste Management] have a price for keeping the facility open [and] it’s somewhere around $3300 and $3500 a month,” says Basalt Town Manager Mike Scanlon. “They thought they could, at that amount of payment by someone, keep it open.”

Basalt will pay $3300 to keep the recycling center running through September. That's while Pitkin and possibly Eagle County officials consider chipping in as well. If there isn’t an agreement by October 1st, Basalt's Town Council will have to consider continuing to cover the whole cost.
