Basalt Middle School won a Northrop Grumman Scholarship which will finance a trip for 50 students to visit the Space Foundation Discovery Center in Colorado Springs.

The grant was awarded to only 20 schools in the state, and was designed specifically for rural school districts. Ryan Bradley, the 8th grade science teacher at Basalt Middle School, said it’s hard enough converting classrooms into laboratories, let alone stay on par with the education technology available statewide.

“It gives us an opportunity to go down and see this amazing facility that maybe the kids in Colorado Springs would take for granted” said Bradley, “but for us it’s a big deal.”

Basalt Middle School has an initiative to include more science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, known as STEAM, into their curriculum. Bradley says hands-on discovery is a valuable learning tool.

“It’s a very different thing when you reach a conclusion based on your own experience versus being told the answer,” said Bradley.
