Update 3:47pm Monday December 7th: Carbondale’s Police Department is interviewing four suspects in the investigation of an armed robbery Monday morning. Police Chief Gene Schilling says originally two suspects made off with an “undisclosed amount of cash” after brandishing a gun at Sweet Leaf Pioneer dispensary in Carbondale.

The robbers were wearing ski masks and were spotted by other office workers in the complex while making their escape in a red Ford Mustang. The medical and recreational shop is located in a collection of offices near a park and residential area just off Highway 133. Carbondale, Garfield County, and Pitkin County authorities worked together to locate the suspects, who changed vehicles and were ultimate tracked down with two other people in the car. All four are now in Carbondale police custody.

Scott Calliham owns a marijuana-infused beverage business next to the Sweet Leaf Pioneer. He and his employees called 911 this morning, after the worker from the pot shop came next door to ask for help. That employee still had on one handcuff and said he had been robbed at gunpoint. Calliham says his business, Inspired Specialty Products, is not linked to Sweet Leaf Pioneer.

Sweet Leaf Pioneer is based in Eagle, and a company website says the Carbondale shop is its second location.  Others in the office complex said it was sparsely staffed.

An Aspen shop was also robbed this year. An Aspen man allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of marijuana while wielding a hammer. He could serve more than sixteen years in prison if convicted of those and related charges.
