Wilderness Workshop, other environmental groups sue BLM over methane

Carbondale-based Wilderness Workshop joined 15 other environmental watchdog groups to file a lawsuit against the federal government. The organizations want to see compliance with a rule to prevent the waste of methane.

In 2016, the Bureau of Land Management adopted a rule that requires oil and gas companies to fix leaks and reduce the waste of natural gas on public lands. It’s known as the methane waste rule, and the Trump administration recently decided to postpone deadlines for companies to comply.

Wilderness Workshop joins the National Wildlife Federation, the Western Environmental Law Center and a dozen other groups in challenging that decision. They say the rule improves public health, reduces climate impacts and saves taxpayers money.

Aspen native Elizabeth Stewart-Severy is excited to be making a return to both the Red Brick, where she attended kindergarten, and the field of journalism. She has spent her entire life playing in the mountains and rivers around Aspen, and is thrilled to be reporting about all things environmental in this special place. She attended the University of Colorado with a Boettcher Scholarship, and graduated as the top student from the School of Journalism in 2006. Her lifelong love of hockey lead to a stint working for the Colorado Avalanche, and she still plays in local leagues and coaches the Aspen Junior Hockey U-19 girls.
